Let’s discover… Java

Arabica has come to Indonesia approximately in 1696. when the Dutch began to grow coffee in this region, and since then it is grown for commercial use until  the day. After the epidemics of plague, the Dutch has changed the bean of Arabica with the bean of Lyberica, and after that with Robusta.

All the most significant plantations are located in the East Java in the vicinity of the volcanic region of Ijen. “Government body” plantations grow about 85% of coffee in the eastern part of Java, close to Bali in Ijen region. Djampit and Blawan are the greatest plantations. Blawan is the huge region of 2268acres. There is one old sort of coffee which you can find in this region, and it is called Java Typica, and the greatest number of sorts of coffee are the varieties of Catimor.

Java, in general, stands for an elegant, clean cup of coffee in comparison to other coffees form Indonesia. Mostly, it is fully washed coffee, has a strong, Indonesian texture, but without the tone of earthy flavors.  The problem is acidity, which is lacking, in traces, and coffee with such characteristics can come up with a flat taste, which is incomplete, like something is missing…And the truth is that it misses the acidity and fine aromas. Java coffee of average quality stands for a good choice for the blend, but sometimes you can find the coffees which you can use as a Single Origin blends.

“Government estate” Java comes from the region which is made of 4 plantations: Kayumas, Blawan, Djampit, Pancoer which date back in the time of Dutch colonialism. Coffees from these plantations are of high quality, creamy texture, full bodied, and with fine aromatics.

Some of the plantations leave the coffee to rest up to three years. During this period, it is going through the process of “monsooned” ,  which means that it is exposed to the hot, humid air during the periods of rainfall. As it is “getting old”, the beans change the colour from the green to the light brown, and the taste is gaining on the strength, and it loses the acidity. These “old” coffees you can find under the name:  Old Government,  Old Brown, Old Java.

In some countries, including USA, “Java” refers to the drink of coffee (Cup of Java), and the Indonesian phrase “Kopi Jawa” refers to the origin of coffee and is used to signify the special style of preparation of coffee, which allude to strong, black, very sweet coffee.

Traditional “Mocha Java” blend is famous for the combination of coffees from Yemen and Java.

The name Bromo derives from the Javanese pronunciation of hindu God Brahma. The mountain Bromo is situated in the center of the great valley which in the Javanese is called Lautan Pasir. This valley is the protected nature reservation since 1919. This mountain is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, and there are many legends about it.
